The formation of a Mar Thoma Congregation in Dwarka in 2002 and its subsequent elevation as St. James Mar Thoma Parish in 2004 was an act of God, bringing together a community of Mar Thoma believers from different Parishes in the capital city of Delhi. At the initiative of the then Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos, a meeting of prospective residents of Dwarka was convened on 17th July, 2000. The Dwarka Project Committee under the Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos as the Patron, Rev. Daniel Thomas as President and Mr Babu Cherian as Convener was constituted in the meeting held at the Diocesan Centre on 14th April, 2001. The ‘Family Get-together’ of all the prospective residents of Dwarka held on 10th February 2002 which was graced by the new Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas along with Rev. Daniel Thomas resulted in the formation of the Mar Thoma Congregation at Dwarka through a Kalpana w.e.f 1st August 2002 and Rev. Joseph Chacko, Secretary to the Diocesan Bishop was appointed as the Vicar-in-charge of the new Congregation.
The first Communion Service held on 4th August 2002 at the St. Gregorios School was attended by a large number of priests and laity from all over the City. After the formation of the Congregation, Holy Communion and Worship Services were held regularly at the St. Mary’s School in Sector 19 Dwarka. As more and more families joined the new Congregation, it became imperative to elevate the Congregation to that of a full fledged Parish. This long pending dream was fulfilled with the issue of another Kalpana by the Metropolitan announcing the formation of the new Parish with the name ‘St. James Mar Thoma Church’ with effect from 1st October 2004. Rev. Joseph Chacko, the Bishop’s Secretary was appointed as the first Vicar of the Parish. Thereafter, Rev.Dr. Jayan Thomas, Rev.Sam T Koshy, Rev.Mathew Thomas, Rev.Raju Thomas, Rev.Johnson M John and Rev.Joymon S K respectively served as Vicars in our parish. The untimely passing away of Rev. Mathew Thomas who toiled hard for the construction of the Church building in a fatal accident was an irreparable loss to the Parish. The Dedication of the Church building was done by our Metropolitan, His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan, assisted by the Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Mar Paulos on 26th February, 2011. It is difficult to recount the names and the efforts undertaken by Rev. Raju Thomas and all the Members of the St James Family in the construction of the Church, but their efforts will be remembered for ever. The Parish has since grown in the spiritual and physical realms under the dynamic leadership of the present Vicar, Rev. Sanal P George.
